Malachi Stephens, a 13 year old middle school student in Georgia, accidentally shot himself and later died at the hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Malachi had been showing off a gun on Instagram Live, a social media platform that allows you to live stream, when the incident occurred.
According to family members he had traded his iPhone for the handgun just four days before the shooting.
Malachi s mother had seen her son 10 minutes prior to the incident taking out the trash. Moments later he locked himself in his room where he pulled out the gun and started to show it off to his friends on the mobile app. After playing with it for some time he accidentally shot himself while his friends watched him live.
Immediately after hearing the gunshot Malachi’s mother, Shaniqua, rushed upstairs to his room. She then kicked the bedroom door down to get to her son. Unfortunately it was too late. When she finally got inside the room her 13 year old boy was laying on the floor in a puddle of blood.
“I heard a big boom. I couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or what, I just knew that something was wrong.”, his mother said.
“We kicked in the door, we found him just laying there in a pool of blood. My daughter screamed and said ,”Mom turn his phone off!”. As I proceed to look at his phone, he was on Instagram live”
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he continued to fight for his life, until his death.
Friends and family members gathered together in memory of Malachi. The lighted candles and spoke kind words to preserve his memory as the cheerful happy kid that he was.
Forest Park police are investigating the incident and trying to determine how exactly the teen obtained the weapon.
